Collagenous Colitis

Collagenous colitis is a cause of persistent watery diarrhea with the absence of blood in the bowel movement. Many forms of colitis, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, are easily diagnosed because they cause the lining of the lower intestines to appear red and irregular. However, with collagenous colitis the lining appears normal and requires a biopsy to make a diagnosis.

Symptoms of collagenous colitis include watery diarrhea, weight loss and discomfort in the rectum or abdomen. The cause of collagenous colitis is unknown. Some believe the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be a factor. Collagenous colitis most often occurs in women over the age of 65, but can occur at any time during adulthood.

Collagenous colitis may also occur in people who have lost the overall health of their gastrointestinal system.
