Summary: Depression symptoms greatly affect a person's family, work, school, sleeping and eating habits and general health. Symptoms of depression usually revolve around a loss of interest in a person's favorite things.

Depression Symptoms

Depression symptoms usually include a pervasive low mood, or loss of interest or pleasure in favored activities. Depression symptoms cause people to be preoccupied with feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt or regret, helplessness or hopelessness.

Other symptoms of depression include poor concentration and memory, withdrawal from social situations and activities, reduced libido (sex drive), and thoughts of death or suicide.

Insomnia is common in people with depression symptoms. Appetite often decreases when suffering from symptoms of depression with resulting weight loss, although increased appetite and weight gain occasionally occur.

Deppresion symptoms also include persistent physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, or chronic pain.  In severe cases, depression symptoms may cause psychotic symptoms such as delusions or, less commonly, hallucinations, usually of an unpleasant nature.

Natural therapies focus on increasing overall health by addressing diet, nutritional status with vitamin and mineral supplementation and specific herbs, such as St. John's Wort which has been found to be effective in mild to moderate depression.
