Diverticulosis Diet

Summary:
A diverticulosis diet can lower your risk for diverticulosis, a condition that occurs when small pouches in the digestive tract bulge out. A diet for diverticulosis can also improve the condition in those who have it.

Diverticulosis Diet

A diverticulosis diet is the first question many people ask for when diagnosed with diverticulosis. A diet for diverticulosis can be helpful to reduce or eliminate the pain/discomfort experienced with diverticulosis.

Are there foods that are better than others when it comes to a diverticulosis diet? Of course. However, not all diverticulosis diets will work for everyone.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says foods such as nuts, popcorn hulls, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, caraway seeds, and sesame seeds have traditionally been labeled as problem foods for people with diverticulosis. The seeds in tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries, raspberries, and poppy seeds, are not considered harmful by the NIDDK.

If we agree that diverticulosis only occurs in people who have unhealthy gastrointestinal systems, then a diet for diverticulosis patients can be the basis for gastrointestinal health.

Diverticulosis happens because of poor diet which might include too much processed food, fast food, foods high in bad fats and may be the reason for the  accompanying inflammatory process.

Whole foods, meaning those not processed or in other words "as nature intended" are the mainstay of a diet for diverticulosis.
