Gluten Intolerance

Summary:
Gluten intolerance is often misunderstood. Also known as a gluten sensitivity, it can be easily confused with having Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy...and there is a difference between a gluten intolerance and the other two conditions...though the symptoms of gluten intolerance are sometimes the same as with Celiac or a gluten allergy. Confused?

Gluten Intolerance

Gluten intolerance is a gluten sensitivity or better defined, a digestive problem with any food containing gluten. It is an inability to digest gluten or tolerate it in any form. A gluten intolerance happens solely and entirely within the digestive system as opposed to a gluten allergy which happens in the bloodstream. This intolerance to gluten is also different from Celiac Disease which is a wearing away of the villi that lines the gastrointestinal system and provides the vast absorptive surface for moving nutrients into our bloodstream.

Gluten intolerance requires the avoidance of any foods containing wheat, oats, barley, spelt, triticale and rye.

If you have been tested for Celiac Disease and it came back negative, that does not mean you do not have an intolerance to gluten or a gluten allergy.

As a gluten intolerance happens entirely in the gastrointestinal system, so does Celiac Disease when gluten causes the villi of the small intestine to wear down to small nubs. This decreases the absorptive surface and causes GI tract symptoms.  The symptoms of Celiac and the symptoms of gluten intolerance may be similar.

A gluten allergy happens in the bloodstream when foods cross over from the small intestine to the bloodstream improperly, usually in the presence of an unhealthy gastrointestinal system. Antibodies are created to that food and every time it is eaten chemistry is created that can cause a wide range of symptoms, especially inflammation. Other symptoms may be similar to Celiac and a gluten intolerance.

Symptoms of Gluten Intolerance

The main symptoms of gluten intolerance, Celiac Disease or gluten allergy can be gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, reflux, GERD, diarrhea, constipation, alternating diarrhea/constipation, abnormal bowel frequency or bowel urgency, pain, spasms, vomiting, blood, mucous and hemorrhoids. There can be others.

The solution for gluten intolerance, Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy is the same. Avoid the ingestion of gluten containing foods.
