Lymphocytic Colitis
Lymphocytic colitis, aka collagenous colitis or microscopic colitis, is a cause of persistent watery diarrhea without the presence of blood in the bowel movement. Many forms of colitis, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, are easily diagnosed because they cause the lining of the lower intestines to appear red and irregular to the naked eye through colonoscopy. However, with lymphocytic colitis the lining appears normal and requires a biopsy to make a diagnosis.
Symptoms of lymphocytic colitis include watery diarrhea, weight loss and discomfort in the rectum or abdomen. The cause of lymphocytic colitis is unknown. Some believe the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be a factor. Lymphocytic colitis most often occurs in women over the age of 65, but can occur at any time during adulthood.
Lymphocytic colitis may also occur in people who have lost the overall health
of their gastrointestinal system.
