Pancreatitis Symptoms
Pancreatitis symptoms are caused by an inflammation of the large gland behind the stomach known as the pancreas. Pancreatitis symptoms occur when digestive enzymes produced in your pancreas become activated too soon.
During normal digestion, the inactivated pancreatic enzymes move through ducts in your pancreas and travel to the small intestine where the enzymes become activated and help with digestion. Pancreatitis symptoms occur when the enzymes become activated while still in the pancreas. This causes the enzymes to irritate the cells of your pancreas, causing inflammation and the signs and symptoms associated with pancreatitis.
Pancreatitis symptoms can also be caused by gallstones, trauma, viral infections, mumps, excessive alcohol, hypercalcemia and peptic ulcers.
Symptoms of Pancreatitis
Symptoms of pancreatitis are characterized by severe pain in the middle of the abdomen. People often describe the pain as a deep pain that radiates to the back. Symptoms of pancreatitis are often made worse by eating.
Pancreatitis symptoms can include severe abdominal pain, swelling and tenderness, nausea, vomiting, fever, sweating, rapid pulse, dehydration, low blood pressure, and shock.
Symptoms of chronic pancreatitis include back pain, abdominal pain, weight loss, diabetes and malabsorption.
Many patients with
pancreatitis also complain of other symptoms that suggest IBS, Crohn's Disease or Colitis.
