Proton pump inhibitors side effects are more than one may think. The FDA recently warned of proton pump inhibitors side effects being low magnesium levels. The fact is ALL minerals are at risk for lowered blood levels as a side effect of proton pump inhibitors like Nexium and Prilosec.

Proton pump inhibitors side effects, according to recent FDA reports may cause low magnesium levels if taken for long periods of time. Proton pump inhibitors are also known as PPIs and include such common over-the-counter drugs such as Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix, and Prilosec.

The side effects of proton pump inhibitors of low serum magnesium levels can cause serious adverse events including muscle spasm, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. Not all patients will experience these symptoms though. Magnesium supplements are typically used to treat low magnesium levels, but in about 25% of cases reviewed, magnesium supplements alone did not sufficiently raise low magnesium levels and discontinuing the proton pump inhibitors ended the proton pump inhibitors side effects.

Proton pump inhibitors reduce the risk of ulcers by decreasing the amount of acid in the stomach. A viscious cycle exists for patients who take NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for various reasons are prescribed a proton pump inhibitor to treat the known NSAID side effects. Why? NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and Celebrex, when taken regularly or at high doses raise the risk of gastric and duodenal ulcers. The proton pump inhibitors reduce the acid in the stomach and staves off the eventual discomfort from the NSAIDs. This is on top of the low magnesium levels. If you fear proton pump inhibitors side effects, talk to your doctor about checking your magnesium level.

Further Side Effects of Proton Pump Inhibitors

Low magnesium levels are not the only side effects of proton pump inhibitors. ALL minerals are potentially at risk of being on the low side as a side effects of proton pump inhibitors.

This information has been know for decades and has been detailed in Dr. Dahlman’s free reports for that long also. It is also detailed on page 34 of Dr. Dahlman’s book, “Why Doesn’t My Doctor Know This?”

For those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and especially heartburn, acid reflux, GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) or Barrett’s Esophagitis, this is an important point because the buffering down…or lowering of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid)…prevents the preparation of ALL minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium from being prepared by the necessary amount of acid in the stomach for absorption later in the small intestine. Hence, the low serum (blood) levels.

A better tactic would be to restore health to the gastrointestinal system through the use of all natural supplements and temporary dietary changes. Dr. Dahlman’s free IBS report describes how to do this and end the symptoms of IBS or the symptoms physician’s usually prescribe proton pump inhibitors for and ends the possibility of side effects of proton pump inhibitors.
