Ulcerative Colitis Diet

Summary: An ulcerative colitis diet is a common need for sufferers and yes, there are diets for it, but they are specific to each individual. Most patients have their symptoms for different reasons and common dietary changes are necessary for all ulcerative colitis patients, but there are additional dietary choices that make each ulcerative colitis diet unique to any given individual.  It is possible to eliminate this condition from your life with initial dietary changes, a food allergy test to identify foods that are contributing to the inflammatory process in your body and all natural supplements.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet

It is possible to figure out an ulcerative colitis diet beginning by learning what not to eat. Once the patient has an understanding of that, all other foods are allowed to be eaten.

To help you eliminate symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis, we must
begin with the elimination of foods that are common to every ulcerative colitis patient. That begins our understanding of the specific diet for you.

Your specific ulcerative colitis diet can be determined, but it is a complex task to do so.  Eliminating ulcerative colitis with diet alone is rare as there are other variables that contribute to ulcerative colitis.

Read about a successful step-by-step treatment plan that addresses all the variables a patient should be aware of. Described in a free Crohn's/Colitis report, available for download at the bottom of this page are descriptions of all the variables necessary to correct in order to conquer ulcerative colitis. The first five variables apply to all patients. Additional variables will be necessary to address in a step-by-step manner for more difficult patients.

Ulcerative Colitis Variables

Nine separate variables may complicate one's understanding of how to treat ulcerative colitis. The reason for your symptoms will be found within them. The first four are altered levels of beneficial bacteria, possible presence of bad bacteria, yeast or parasites, lack of digestive enzymes and imbalanced bowel chemistry. Everyone addresses them as well as the correct way to eliminate dairy products as described below in the Crohn's/Colitis free report. Note that the last five variables are all diet related.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet

Intolerances to Dairy Products

Eliminating dairy products for ulcerative colitisDairy products may be the most harmful of all foods you could eat. This food group must be eliminated for anyone suffering from ulcerative colitis or any uncomfortable symptoms associated with your gastrointestinal system. This is a 100% elimination.

All dairy products such as all milk, cheeses, ice cream, cottage cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, yogurt and kefir must be eliminated from your diet. Butter is the exception so feel free to enjoy it. Read all labels looking for five words: milk, cheese, the milk sugar called lactose and milk proteins called whey and casein.

Intolerances to Gluten Containing Foods

The second most important dietary elimination to conquer any type of colitis is the elimination of all gluten containing foods. Gluten has been recognized in the last number of years as a pro-inflammatory food group and the growing amount of gluten free foods in the grocery store is happening for a reason. Gluten can cause many different gastrointestinal symptoms and its elimination is well worth the effort for its benefit. Not all people need to eliminate gluten when trying to figure out their ulcerative colitis diet. Many people, with or without ulcerative colitis may benefit from eliminating it from their diet.

Gluten is contained in any foods that originate from wheat, barley and rye.

Intolerances to Fructose Containing Foods

Fructose intolerance diet for ulcerative colitisIf the above diet eliminations and the natural supplements don't begin to resolve your ulcerative colitis, some patients may need to eliminate all foods containing fructose. No, that doesn't mean just fruit, it means all foods that contain fructose. A little recognized food villain that has been found in the last 10-15 years to be increasingly responsible for gastrointestinal complaints. Almost all traditional medical doctors completely ignore this food group as a possible variable.

Fructose is contained in all fruits, all sugar (table sugar, honey, maple syrup,  molasses, high fructose corn syrup and agave), corn, beets, carrots, onions, peas, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet potatoes, turnips and winter squash (acorn, buttercup, calabaza, delicate, Hubbard, spaghetti, sweet dumpling and turban).

The main symptoms of a fructose intolerance can be pain, gas and bloating, loose bowels or inconsistent bowel behavior (good days and bad days). A person can have 1, 2, 3 or all 4 of these symptoms suggesting they have a fructose intolerance.

Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease, diagnosed through colonoscopy or bloodwork, is a condition where an  allergic response takes place in the small intestine wearing away the villi that are responsible for the large surface area for absorption. Without these villi, many gastrointestinal symptoms may occur.

Complete elimination of all gluten containing foods mentioned above is necessary as is understanding what non gluten containing foods are processed on the same equipment as gluten containing foods. Called cross contamination, even the smallest amount of gluten can affect a celiac patient. Celiac patients must also be concerned with hidden gluten in items such as makeup, lotions and hair products. Complete lists of these products can be found online.

Cross contamination or hidden gluten is not a concern for patients not diagnosed with celiac disease who simply eliminate gluten because of trying to determine their ulcerative colitis diet.

Possible Food Allergies

Food allergy ulcerative colitisAn allergy to a food is different than an intolerance. Intolerances happen within the digestive system. Allergies happen in the blood stream. You can be allergic to a food group or food from that group, but not intolerant of them. You can be intolerant of a food or food group, but not allergic to them. You can be both intolerant and allergic to any given food group or food. It is impossible to differentiate between the two and learn what foods you are allergic to without a food allergy test. Intolerances can be determined by trial and error elimination of any food or food group. If you see a change in your symptoms, you have learned something by that elimination.

So, any or all of the above variables may need to be addressed for you to completely eliminate your symptoms as there isn't an exact ulcerative colitis diet that can be recommended to everyone. You're different than the next person, aren't you?

It's too complex of an issue for just dietary change, but you can determine your specific diet for ulcerative colitis by understanding what not to eat. Dr. Dahlman explains that in great detail in his free report. By understanding the foods to avoid, all else is OK to eat and we ultimately design your personal ulcerative colitis diet.

Have you tried some of these dietary eliminations with no success?  Many have, but it is a planned step-by-step process of elimination of these foods while we utilize all-natural supplements to re-establish beneficial bacterial balances and restore proper chemistry that is the strength of Dr. Dahlman's ulcerative colitis diet treatment. Ulcerative colitis patients may not need to eliminate all of the food groups mentioned and any elimination usually is not permanent.
