What is Candida?

Summary:
Candida is a term used for many species of fungal organisms. Candida, Candida yeast and Candida Albicans all refer to the same organism. Many Candida species live on or in the human body, primarily the skin and all mucosal membranes including the gastrointestinal system, genitourinary tract and specifically the vagina and respiratory tract.

Candida is a puzzling organism. Candida Albicans is a necessary part of the human body, but at times, it grows out of bounds and causes health problems ranging from the annoying to potentially life threatening.

Most common is the female "yeast infection", usually, but not always, after the taking of a course of antibiotics for an infection. What do antibiotics do? They kill the bacteria that's causing the infection, and since Candida is not a bacteria, it is a yeast, aka fungus, it overgrows vaginally. This then requires an additional treatment to kill the excess yeast.

In some people, both male and female, after many courses of antibiotics or for other reasons, a systemic yeast problem may occur. This may lead to many unusual health problems. There are some cautions to be noted.

If you have found a "Yeast Test" that you have taken and scored very high leading you to believe you have a systemic yeast condition, beware. You might, but consider that if you take an honest look at all the symptoms that the test includes...some of them you say you have...can you name many more symptoms that were not listed in this test?

That means the author of the test believes almost all human symptoms are yeast related. They are not. You still might have a systemic yeast infection, but it is a much better analysis if you get objective lab work to confirm it's presence which can be done through blood work or stool culture.

The symptoms associated with an overgrowth of yeast can be part of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and can be ANY uncomfortable symptoms associated with your gastrointestinal system.
