Summary:
Diverticulitis is the infection or inflammation that occurs in people with diverticulosis. Diverticulitis happens after pressure forms in the colon and pushes weak tissue outward forming these pouches. Diverticulitis patients have these "diverticula" that can then become infected or inflamed.

What is Diverticulitis?
Diverticulitis occurs in patients who have been diagnosed with diverticulosis. The pouches that occur in diverticulosis become inflamed and/or infected and the name diverticulitis means the inflammation of the diverticula. This condition can lead to quite a bit of abdominal pain. Severe infection can lead to fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping, and constipation.
Common medical thought about the cause of diverticulitis is that a low fiber diet is responsible. In truth, it may be part of the problem along with a lack of overall health in the gastrointestinal system and accompanied with constipation in some. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may be a better description of the lack of health in the GI tract as well as the constipation. I believe diverticulitis and IBS are linked.
