What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is classified by the presence of chronic widespread pain. A diagnosis of Fibromyalgia Syndrome requires the finding of tenderness in 11 of 18 defined points on the body.
Fibromyalgia must also have pain on both sides of the body and above and below the waist. These tender points are localized areas where slight to moderate pressure causes a sensation of pain. Chronic Fibromyalgia Syndrome can cause this pain to be mildly irritating to extremely sensitive.
Fibromyalgia is not life-threatening or contagious, but can change one's quality of life.
There is no known medical cure for Fibromyalgia and traditional medical treatments mostly reduce symptoms through education, exercise and psychological interventions. Relief varies on the individual and rarely is satisfactory.
