GERD
GERD is short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. GERD is the chronic symptoms of having stomach content back up the throat and cause damage and/or discomfort. GERD is usually due to changes to the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, in other words, the sphincter between the two is not holding back the stomach content resulting in GERD symptoms.
GERD Symptoms
GERD symptoms are heartburn, regurgitation and trouble swallowing. Other GERD symptoms may be pain with swallowing, excessive saliva and nausea.
Sometimes GERD symptoms lead to damage to the esophagus. Ulcers, strictures and sometimes cancer (Barrett's Esophagitis) are some of the more rare symptoms or GERD.
GERD Diet
A GERD diet is usually ignored as relief for GERD by traditional medicine. A GERD diet is probably the most successful solution for GERD as the medications prescribed rarely work permanently and are simply masking the symptoms of GERD. They don't address the cause of GERD.
Many people think they have an excess of hydrochloric acid that comes up their throat and burns them. The reality is that they probably have a deficiency of hydrochloric acid and Dr. Dahlman explains how that can happen in his Irritable Bowel Syndrome report.
