Summary: Hypothyroidism is a misunderstood condition and also misdiagnosed. Though the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be problematic, the traditional medical approach to hypothyroidism is with synthetic hormone replacement with various side effects.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Causes of hypothyroidism can be an iodine deficiency, a deficiency of thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) from the pituitary or an overall lack of health that can cause either.

Causes of Hypothyroidism

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is an auto-immune hypothyroidism that has a relationship to the consumption of gluten containing foods.

Secondary hypothyroidism is caused by the pituitary not creating enough TSH and that can be caused by damage to the pituitary, a tumor, radiation or surgery.

Tertiary hypothyroidism is when the hypothalamus fails to produce sufficient thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH prompts the pituitary gland to produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Hence may also be termed hypothalamic-pituitary-axis hypothyroidism.
