Pancreatitis means inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis is characterized by rapid onset and can have severe complications. Chronic pancreatitis is long term inflammation of the pancreas that alters normal function and can cause damage to the pancreas.

Pancreatitis, both types, are characterized by recurring or persistent abdominal pain. The most common cause of acute pancreatitis is gallstones and alcohol consumption is the second most common. Trauma and drug reactions are also involved in a lesser number of cases. There is also autoimmune pancreatitis where the body attacks the tissue of the pancreas.

If gallstones are involved, it creates a backflow of digestive enzymes that are normally produced in the pancreas and, remaining in the pancreas causes the enzymes to dissolve the tissue.

Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis is more longterm. About 70% of the cases are caused by chronic alcohol use, usually more than 150g/day for between 6-12 years.

Common tests used to determine chronic pancreatitis are serum amylase and serum lipase blood tests, triglyceride blood tests, enzyme measurement in stool, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans and MRI’s.

Many patients with pancreatitis also complain of other symptoms that suggest IBS, Crohn’s Disease or colitis. One thing that can be said for sure is that only people with unhealthy gastrointestinal systems get IBS, Crohn’s Disease, colitis or pancreatitis.
